The new Facilities Support Building at RAL, Harwell, Oxfordshire is now complete and has been passed over to the client for final commissioning. The two 35m x 70m internal volumes provide up to 12m clear headroom below gantry cranes rated at up to 50 Tonnes, as well as new dedicated office/laboratory space to allow the specialists at RAL freedom to construct experimental equipment and manage by-products at the UK government’s top nuclear research facility.
Working with Oxford Architects, CNM designed the complex groundworks including a 5m step in ground level along the building centreline, new steel superstructure, as well as the external yards, car parking, roads and all below ground drainage including trade waste systems and sustainable drainage systems for STFC/Willmott Dixon, which has been well received by the end users.
