The NHLI contains special facilities for medical research including general laboratories, testing facilities, biological safety enclosures and highly sensitive microscopy, measuring and scanning equipment.

This project required the complete alteration and refurbishment of the former St Wilfrid Convent building within a Conservation Area. The building was constructed of traditional materials, load bearing masonry walls and timber floors. Substantial repairs and reconfiguration works were necessary together with the installation of structural steel frames to strengthen the existing structure.

In addition to the complex conversion of the existing building, a new three storey extension was constructed incorporating special bunkers in the basement for the storage and use of radioactive materials.
